Nest vs Ecobee Thermostat: Which One Actually Saves More Money?

Two years of data from both thermostats in the same house. Ecobee's room sensors surprised me. Here's the honest comparison.

I ran a Nest in my upstairs zone and an Ecobee in my downstairs zone for two winters and two summers. Same house, similar square footage, comparable HVAC equipment. Here's what the data showed.

Bottom Line First

Nest is better if: You want simplicity, Google ecosystem integration, and a thermostat that genuinely learns without setup.

Ecobee is better if: You have multiple rooms, occupancy patterns that don't correlate with a single location, or you want more manual control and data.

Savings were nearly identical over 2 years β€” around 15% vs. the "dumb" thermostat baseline. Ecobee's room sensors gave it an edge in multi-story homes.

What's Different Beyond the Interface

The Learning Approach

Nest: Fully automatic. It watches your manual adjustments for ~1 week, then creates a schedule. You don't configure anything β€” it figures you out.

Ecobee: Schedule-first. You set up time blocks, and SmartRecovery + occupancy sensing optimize within that framework. More control, more setup.

For renters or people who don't want to think about it: Nest wins. For optimizers who want to see the data: Ecobee wins.

Room Sensors: Ecobee's Killer Feature

Ecobee comes with one remote room sensor (more available for ~$39 each). The thermostat averages temperature across sensors to determine when to heat/cool.

In a two-story house, this matters enormously. Upstairs can be 4Β°F warmer than the main floor thermostat β€” meaning you're heating to 72Β°F upstairs while the sensor reads 68Β°F downstairs. Ecobee fixes this.

Nest now has the Nest Temperature Sensor as an add-on (~$39), but it's more limited than Ecobee's implementation.

Google vs. Apple Ecosystem

Nest: Deep Google integration. If you have a Google Home, Nest is seamless. Works with Google Assistant natively.

Ecobee: Works with Alexa, HomeKit, Google, and SmartThings. It's the Switzerland of smart thermostats β€” ecosystem-agnostic.

If you're all-in on Apple HomeKit: Ecobee. If you're all-in on Google: Nest. Everyone else: Ecobee is more flexible.

Installation: Both Are DIY-Friendly

Both take about 30–45 minutes with a screwdriver. Label your wires (there are usually 4–8), take a photo, remove the old thermostat, connect to the new baseplate, and follow the app.

⚠️ Warning:

The most common problem: no C-wire. Check your wiring before buying. Ecobee includes a "Power Extender Kit" (PEK) if you have only 2 wires. Nest uses a capacitor workaround that works in most cases but can cause issues with some HVAC equipment.

My Two-Year Verdict

I kept the Ecobee for the main floor and replaced the Nest upstairs with a second Ecobee. The room sensors made a bigger difference than I expected β€” especially in summer when upstairs rooms trap heat.

If you have a one-story house or a single thermostat zone: flip a coin (or go with your ecosystem). Both are genuinely good products.

If you have a multi-story house: Ecobee with room sensors.
